Gyorgy Pauk

Gyorgy Pauk entered the Liszt Academy of Music at age 12 where he studied with Zoltan Kodaly. He left his native Hungary in 1956 for Holland, having won First Prizes in the Paganini Competition in 1956, the Munich Competition in 1957 and the Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris in 1959. While living in Holland he played for Yehudi Menhuin who immediately suggested he come to London in 1961. Pauk has performed with many of the great conductors of our time, including Lorin Maazel, Pierre Boulez, Charles Dutoit, Antal Dorati, Leonard Slatkin, and Andre Previn. He appears regularly in all corners of the world, from Asia to Europe, Australia, and North and South America. He made his United States debut in 1972, appearing with the Chicago Symphony and Sir Georg Solti, at the maestro's request. In addition to his command of the standard classical and romantic repertory, he is a champion of contemporary music as well. He has given premieres of works by Krystoff Penderecki, Peter Maxwell Davies, and Witold Lutoslawski, each time under the baton of the composer.
