Mikhail Kopelman

Mikhail Kopelman has performed and given master classes in the world's foremost cultural centers. Born in 1947 in Uzhgorod in the former USSR, he began his study of the violin at the age of six, subsequently attending the Moscow Conservatory. In 1973, he won second prize in the Jacques Thibaud International Violin Competition in Paris. Mr. Kopelman served as first violinist of the Borodin String Quartet with whom he performed and recorded for two decades, and he recently finished his tenure as first violinist of the Tokyo String Quartet. Mikhail Kopelman currently leads the recently-formed Kopelman Quartet. For over 15 years he was closely associated with Sviatoslav Richter in numerous performances and recordings. He has also collaborated with Alicia de Larrocha, Mstislav Rostropovich, Christoph Eschenbach, Yuri Bashmet, Gidon Kremer, Claude Frank, Richard Stolzman, Gary Graffman, Toby Hoffman and Emanuel Ax. Mr. Kopelman has served on the faculties of the Moscow Conservatory, Yale University, and is currently Professor of Violin at the Eastman School of Music. His performances are available on the Melodia, EMI, Virgin Classics, Teldec and Philips labels.
