Tuomas Haapanen

Born in Helsinki in 1924, Tuomas Haapanen studied violin at the Sibelius Academy; and then trained in Paris under Léon Nauwinck and René Benedetti. In addition to a fine career as soloist and chamber player, he was also concertmaster of Finland Radio's Symphony Orchestra and Helsinki's Chamber Orchestra. He has been a teacher of violin and rector of Turku Conservatory, posts he also held at the renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Presently, Tuomas Haapanen is president of the Sibelius International Competition and has regularly been invited to serve as chairman or member of the jury for numerous national and international competitions.
